Small Cheer and Great Welcome

“Small Cheer and Great Welcome Makes a Merry Feast.” – WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Shakespeare’s thought is something that all good hostesses know and graciously implement for all their guests. The Ritz-Carlton credo takes this to another level and one that is very simple to keep in mind when entertaining houseguests:

“The Ritz-Carlton is a place where the genuine care and comfort of our guests is our highest mission. We pledge to provide the finest personal service and facilities for our guests who will always enjoy a warm, relaxed, yet refined ambience. The Ritz-Carlton experience enlivens the senses, instills well-being and fulfills even the unexpressed wishes and needs of our guests.”

Greeting your guests with a smile and a genuine welcoming spirit sets the tone for a wonderful stay, whether formal or informal. Fresh flowers and carafes of water on the night table always receive smiles. Books and magazines of interest placed on the night table with gentle lighting from a lamp are appreciated. Anticipate your guest’s electronic needs and provide your Wi-Fi code along with an extra charger for their use.

Spend the night in your guestroom to experience first hand a night’s stay at your home. Sound machines may need to be added or new linens for bed and bath. Even luxurious pillows add to the experience. If time permits, pressed bed linens are the ultimate gift to your guest’s senses. French philosopher Michel Serres wrote in Les Cinq Sens (The Five Senses), “Prior to form, prior to color or hue, the material must be touched. Skin, pillowcase, smooth or rough…. prior to the gaze, the grain.” Fabrics appeal to the sense of touch, which is the most important of our senses both physically and emotionally.

Pretty soaps and shampoos with dusting powders are nice indulgences. Simple but elegant solutions are a true gift of gracious hospitality.

If cocktails are served, use the finest linen cocktail napkins that are available to you. Leron linens, Julia B. and Leontine linens are just a few of the extraordinary companies that have gorgeous pieces. Antique shops are great places to find vintage damask and embroidered linens.

A beautifully stocked drink cart and several divine morsels to whet the appetite are most appreciated as a nice refresher after travel. A poster of a well stocked bar cart is shown in the photos as a jumping off point to create an inspired bar cart.

The best hostess is always original and creative, thereby weaving a very special relationship with each individual that is a guest in her home.
